Understanding hCG Levels
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is the hormone detected by pregnancy tests. It doubles approximately every 48-72 hours in early pregnancy.
| Weeks Since LMP | Typical hCG Range (mIU/mL) | Detection |
|---|---|---|
| 3 weeks | 5-50 | Blood test only |
| 4 weeks | 5-426 | Urine test possible |
| 5 weeks | 18-7,340 | Urine test reliable |
| 6 weeks | 1,080-56,500 | Urine test reliable |
| 7-8 weeks | 7,650-229,000 | Peak levels |

What Your Result Means
Positive Result
A positive result means hCG was detected in your urine. This is almost always accurate. Contact your healthcare provider to schedule your first prenatal visit.
Negative Result
A negative result means hCG was not detected. If your period is late, wait a few days and test again using your first morning urine.
Faint Line
A faint line is usually a positive result — it means hCG is present but at low levels. Test again in 2-3 days; the line should get darker as hCG rises.
When to Test Again
- Negative test, no period: Wait 3-5 days and test again
- Faint line: Test again in 2-3 days — line should darken
- Positive test: Schedule a prenatal visit — no need to retest
